Where does the time go? 20's, 30's & 50 something.... |
Hair is a many wonderous thing. We can do so much with it. We
can style it in so many different ways; Color, braid, cut it, pull it up, leave
it down. You can be very creative with it. It can be fun and whimsically,
casual and cool, or professional to make an impression. Sometimes, depending on
the cut you can go from one mode to the next with just a simple adjustment. Now
a days, pretty much anything goes. People are just doing themselves, which I
think is rather cool. It feels like it is the sign of the times. Either people
are being less judgmental, or people are not caring what others think. I think
it is a combination of the two. Which I find encouraging in both cases. It
means we are moving in the right direction. Baby steps, right….
Hair can be very useful…. It is something you can utilize to
express yourself. Depending on the length and coarseness it can be used to sew
or tie something together. You can use it to paint, as in bristles for a brush or
use it to create art apart from its being. Another great use for hair is that
it keeps you warm. When I was younger, I appreciated how my hair kept my ears
and head warm during colder times. During the winter I would intentionally grow
it out and wait until the summer to go short.

Me April 2010 |
So what about those that have lost their hair for one reason
or another. Maybe they lost all of it or just some, but it’s so thin that it
looks kind of scraggily, like a witchy poo look…. Yea, that is how mine looked
before I cut and shaved it off. Eventually, it all fell out, but I could not
handle the witchy poo look so I wacked it off one day in the shower all by myself.
I think seeing the witchy poo look was a little bit of a blessing. That may
sound weird, but I believe it made me appreciate the bald look after I wacked off
the rest. Personally, I believe I rocked the bald look. Oh, and it made things
so much easier when getting ready to go anywhere. Not having to do my hair
shaved, pun intended lol, five to thirty minutes off my time to get ready.
The greatest thing about being bald for me was the
liberation. It was very liberating to realize that my hair, while it was
beautiful and healthy, did and does not define me. I can still do anything I want
to without it. It is not like losing a limb or one of our five/six senses. Although,
some people treat hair as if it is an extension of them. For instance, I have
had several people compliment me on my short hair styles. They would sometimes
say, I wish I could get away with that style or cut my hair that short. My question
to them is, why not. Why can’t they cut their hair short, is what I want to
know. All you need is a good stylist or just scissors and a comb. Now when I ask
why not, sometimes I get a mortified look from them and I can relate, as once
upon a time I felt the same way. Sometimes their response is that their
significant other would not like it…. Really!?!? I am not going to get into that
at this time, but the wrongness of it is very off putting and at the very least
conditional.

No Meg Ryan but Sporting the Messy |
|
Me late 2010 |
It is just hair and in some cases grows back. In my case, my
hair grew back very thin and fine. The complete opposite of what it used to be,
which I found quite annoying. The best way I can describe it is, it was like
cotton and when it is wet, well let me ask you this, have you ever tried to
brush out a wet cotton ball? Not an easy thing to do, lol…. Nonetheless, with
the help of my daughter in law, Kelly, it is slowly but surely getting back to
its old self. In the meantime, I am learning how to work it and get this, it is
rare that I have bad hair days. Mostly because I really don’t put much stock
into every hair being in place. For a long time now, even before I lost my hair
I have leaned more towards the messy look. I used to love how Meg Ryan did her
hair in the short bobs that were loosely curled and flipping around without any
clear direction. Something like going with the flow, is what I like to think….
Besides, my hair does not define me. It is from me, so I define it, I make it, I
am so much more than my hair and being without it really taught me that. You
can’t do anything about something that is not there, so move on to the next
issue at hand….

Me on the left, it was everyting I could do to keep it on.... |
When I was bald I did not do the wig thing… I tried, but
they were itchy and too hot, even during the winter. One of the few times I made
the wig work was when I was accepting an award from the Maricopa County Attorney
for my work with Kaity’s Law. Now, there were only a few trusted colleagues
that knew what was going on with me. This was by design because we had just
started Kaity’s Way only a year before my diagnosis. I knew I had a purpose and
mission, but the people that we needed to support the organization did not know
me well enough to know what a determined person I am. I knew I would beat
cancer, but did they. Rather than take a chance on undoing Kaity’s Way before
it had a chance to get started we kept my condition under wraps. It was after that
event that I knew I would not do wigs anymore.
If I needed to keep my dome warm, I opted for
scarves and/or hats. You can do some super cool styles with scarves and hats. Even
now with hair I use scarves and hats still. They can add a bit of flare and
color to your wardrobe any day of the week. You can also fall to the scarves
and hats when your hair is not cooperating. Remember you have options and furthermore
no matter how your hair is, it does not define you. It may enhance you or help
you make a statement, but your true beauty comes from within. With that I am going
to conclude this blog and wish you a great week!! Remember to Keep it Simple (KiS)!
