Magazines: How do you read them?
I read magazines backwards, not sure why but as long as I
can remember when I dig into a magazine I start at the back and thumb forward.
I will do an initial flip through from the front, but if I am going to spend some
time with it I start at the back.
Thinking about it, I believe the articles I want to read are
usually towards the back of the magazine. I believe that is by design. I mean
look at all the advertisements between the front cover and the articles that
are worth reading. A bazillion is what I see. Okay maybe that is an exaggeration,
but you get my point. Advertisements are what keep the magazine afloat. Depending
on the magazine and it’s popularity, I would imagine it can cost a pretty penny
to advertise in a magazine.
I remember as a kid, I loved to look at magazine advertisements
and dream about all the things I would like to have or see. Once I had become
an adult I didn’t have time to look at magazine ads and stopped caring to.
Everything seems so out of reach and it became kind of saddening for me.
Despite my situation I always tried to stay away from things that brought me
down. This may be part of the reason why I go straight to the back and read the
articles. I want to gain knowledge and understanding, toys are not my thing anymore.
Some ads are about things, stuff you are fascinated by, toys. Other ads are
about medications that have ridiculous side effects. Since I am more about memories
instead of toys and I don’t subscribe to pharmaceuticals those ads are of no
use to me.
One of the nicest things someone did for me several years
back
was give me a two year subscription to O magazine. I love Oprah Winfrey
and all she does to spread knowledge, understanding, honesty and kindness to
the world. Talk about a positive influencer. I am hoping some day she will come
across “C is for Conquer” and add it to her library and suggest it for a great
read. That last bit was putting it out to the universe. Part of that two year subscription was while I was sick. The magazine really helped me stay in a positive frame of mind. I really tried to surround myself with goodness the keep my spirits up. The funny thing is I have no idea who sent me that subscription but I really did appreciate it.
Now the reason I chose this topic for a blog is two fold. First
off, I wanted something light hearted, simple, yet real. Something that shows
our diversities, how we can be different, and it is okay. The other fold is
that my sons fiance’, a daughter of our heart, Kelly, told me she reads
magazines backwards also. I had no idea other people did that and was thrilled
to be in company with such a wonderful person. When she told me she reads
magazines backwards too, I told her I am writing a blog about this very
subject.
The moral of this blog is we are all special in our own way
and should do things our way. It is rare that we are alone in anything, yet
there are times we feel so alone. Don’t be afraid of who you are, you do the
real you. Don’t try to be what you think others want, be you! Until next time
Take care and Keep it Simple (KiS)!
